International Day of Happiness

International Day of Happiness, first celebrated in 2013, focuses on the idea that happiness should be considered a fundamental goal of progress for all countries, while also sharing ways to promote and increase the happiness for everyone!

About International Day of Happiness

March 20th marks International Day of Happiness. Set up by the UN, in coordination with Action for Happiness, it is a movement of 160 countries, supporting the idea that happiness should be of central concern to all governments around the world. It recognises that the idea of ‘progress’ should not solely focus on economic growth, but rather should be about increasing human happiness.

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted the idea of happiness being a fundamental goal and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and wellbeing of all peoples.” 2013 was the first year celebrations took place for International Day of Happiness, and have continued every year since.

The Importance of Spreading Happiness

An act of kindness can often lead to a lot more than you may consider. Kindness can boost feelings of confidence, happiness and optimism, and in doing so, may also encourage others to act in a kind and compassionate way. Research has shown that the benefits of helping others are long lasting, and in some cases can last long after the act itself. It’s good to remember, the importance isn’t placed on the size of the actions, as it is thought, that even performing a small act of kindness will have a big impact in increasing the happiness for all those involved. Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary-General of the UN, stated: “by contributing to common good, we ourselves are enriched.”

This reinforces the importance of acting in a kind and compassionate way, as it will not only increase the happiness of those around you, but will also in the long run affect your happiness!

We are currently crowdfunding, aiming to reach a wider audience of people and in doing so intend to help individuals take charge of their wellbeing, gain a better and healthier work-life balance, and hopefully help individuals increase their levels of happiness. Through our crowdfunding you can purchase tickets for our online, virtual workshops at a discounted price, £8 instead of £20, while also supporting us!

If you’re looking to arrange a workshop for your workplace, we also offer new cost-effective wellbeing activities for teams through our crowdfunding with a unique opportunity for you to become part of a social impact project that helps London’s communities. Discover our corporate programmes HERE.
