International Health Day!

International Health Day is more important and significant this year, than ever before. Celebrated on the 7th April, it highlights the extremely important and heroic work healthcare workers do everyday, while also raising awareness, and reducing the stigma around everyone having access to basic levels of healthcare.

About International Health Day

International Health Day, taking place on the 7th April, highlights and celebrates the notion that everyone should have access to healthcare without the prospect of it leading to financial hardship. This day highlights the importance of basic healthcare regardless of where you are from in the world.

Initially set up by the World Health Organization (WHO), it focuses on there being healthcare for ALL, arguing this has significant benefits for all those involved, including governmental bodies. Reports have supported this, stating: “countries that invest in universal healthcare will make a sound investment in their human capital … protecting countries from epidemics, reducing poverty and the risk of hunger, creating jobs, driving economic growth and enhancing gender equality”, not just improving life expectancy.

The Importance of International Health Day

Given what the world has experienced in the last year, the celebration of International Health Day holds more importance than ever before! In 2021 the focus of the day is on celebrating nurses and midwiveswho have revolutionised the healthcare workforce and industry, and are sometimes overlooked.

Not only does this day honor specific groups, but it also sheds light onto much needed conversations. Leading to reducing stigma, raising awareness, supporting treatment and giving thanks to all those who make up the healthcare workforce around the world.
