What is the evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing?

While some of us think ‘of course, it’s evident!’ others might be more skeptical towards art’s impact on one’s mental health and well-being.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now finally published a comprehensive research (from ~900 publications) which concludes that art, in fact, has a positive impact on one’s mental and physical health regardless of their age! Well-being activities that involve art create benefits both for preventative (e.g. music) and treatment (e.g. art therapy) purposes. Arts can also improve conditions of more remote & disadvantaged groups who face greater health risks.

Artists are often the driving force of a flourishing community – think about gentrification, and with them being more involved in healing activities such as art therapy, the global medical, political, and academic societies are also opening up towards more holistic perspectives, resulting in more collaborative communities!
